Higher Education Institutions are complex organisations that fulfil  a multitude of  core functions and capabilities. While different HEIs are structured to fulfil different socio economic or commercial needs, their main capabilities can be described as below:

Teaching and Learning accounts for the largest focus when we think of these institutions but systems and solutions are required for each area.  

Large ERP vendors offer all-in-one solutions that are capable of addressing most of the core capabilities but of late, and with the influence of COVID, the digital transformation has required that institutions globally make essential changes to their investment of systems to ensure the ability to respond to the ever-increasing challenges facing Higher Education and the hybrid delivery of services. 

Africa’s challenges further underscore the need to look at system investment differently. Large monolithic solutions are useful when starting from scratch but not if you already have existing investments or you have specific challenges to address urgently. Point changes are more meaningful and return higher ROI for students, academics and administrators.
